I Can’t Breathe!

I can’t breathe the poisoned air of tyranny

Democracy’s a wreck

As the oxygen of sanity has been deflated

By a knee on a black man’s neck

For everyone to see

And judge and sadly choose a side

I can’t breathe the breath of freedom

When goodness has clearly died

And darkened, countless souls

Who see color as a threat

With no basis to their fear

Of the faces here, and yet

A line is clearly drawn

Through the sand and through the town

And the breath the haters breathe

Is meant to blow the whole house down

Without thought, or care or consequence

Or history, brother to sister to brother

And if their errant wish is granted

The hate they’re left, is for each other

I can’t breathe!
