If a Blog Appears in a Forest…

…and there’s nobody there to read it…

There’s a lot of really smart, insightful stuff written every day by scholars, scholarly journalists, far-thinking bloggers and, often, the most common among us.  Too much of this potentially life-changing wisdom falls silently in metaphorically unpeopled forests or is called into question by unsubstantiated blathering.  So, for every Thomas Friedman or Paul Krugman or Rachel Maddow there are ten Sean Hannity’s or Rush Limbaugh’s or Ann Coulter’s rewriting history, reinventing math or redefining truth.  Unlike any time in the history of mankind, sources of information engulf us and most of us can choose from an endless laundry list of optional delivery systems.  Veracity is seldom of great importance to that choice, while seeking affirmation of our individual biases and ethics would rank considerably higher.  We are way past the point of regulation requiring credible source material for claims and allegations. Although the device of wildly citing expert testimony or published test results would seem open to verifiable scrutiny, the widely expanding industry of fact-checkers unfortunately follows the same yin/yang principles of the facts they are checking; those using laws of science and requiring truth to be, well…truthful vs those who will blow anything out of their asses.

It is always my intent that every word I write be true…at the very least, every other word.
