I guess as long as political cartoonists, (depicting our pending fiscal showdown as Wile E. Coyote suspended in mid air after chasing bi-partisan compromise off a cliff), are our most cogent public voices, we will have to rely on the Acme Co. to come to the rescue. We certainly can’t depend on the merry men and women of Congress to do the right thing. Even if a handful of “Tax Pledge” signers abandon Grover Norquist’s sophomoric, attention-getting, junior high school manifesto, (you know he’s a C- stand-up comedian, right?), in an attempt to show responsible flexibility, the otherwise uncomplicated task of putting our national house in order will, once again, be addressed with an eleventh-hour inadequate Band-Aid© while every issue of import will be summarily kicked twenty or thirty years down the road. Any legislators who are “dug in” against proper and appropriate military budgeting, revisiting a fairer, vastly more affordable single-payer national health plan, equitable tax reform, and an all-out infrastructure revitalization initiative, (call it stimulus if you need to, which, by the way, would eliminate unemployment), should do us all a favor and go the extra mile by becoming fully interred by the sand they have their heads buried in. We deserve a slightly more informed legislative body than the one resembling the least engaged sluggards of our eleventh grade American Lit class whose greatest accomplishment was the painful slog through the Cliff’s Notes version of Ethan Frome.
