Ship of State

And by ship, I mean like Carnival’s Triumph kind, floating powerlessly, reeking of human waste and with far less purpose than Gilligan’s Minnow.  Remember the immediate reaction by disgruntled Republican deck hands to Obama’s first election, declaring, as their “number one priority”, that his tenure would last but a single term?  Now, the unimaginable circumstance of his reelection has resulted in a new and bolder strategy, pretending he’s not even there.

The America I think about, the America that has been a beacon for any foreigner seeking freedom and liberty and fairness and opportunity, the America that stands up against oppression and social injustice, the America that takes pride in excellence and innovation, and the America that has always found a way through the diversity of passionate and opposing opinion, has sailed off to some far horizon.  The President, our President, outlined program after program in his State of the Union that, in my America, would unify everyone’s resolve to be better than we are; at the very least, more like we pretend to be.  Alas, one side of the aisle found these ideas to be reprehensible, fidgeting and sneering as if Obama was farting in their direction with drone-like precision.  Boehner, (one of two useless, copper-colored items supported by the US Treasury), seated in the customary Speaker’s chair, reacted as if the President was spewing a barrage of ‘yo mama’ jokes, and, with slightly less than 50% of our country aligning with the fractious misrepresentation of these fidgety morons, we could easily sink before we reach a safe port.  The overly ambitious and marginally qualified presidential hopeful, Marco Rubio, in his Uncle Tomasino rebuttal, not only ignored the possibility that Obama offered any positive agenda, but took the dry-mouthed, (he couldn’t have been blatantly lying, could he?), party line to baselessly demonize each item as reckless, irresponsible and detrimental to the country’s future, (fucking pre-schoolers!).

Everyone…calmly proceed to your lifeboats!
