I’m guessing that the Michigan State Lottery did not provide the promised “windfall funding” to public education and that gambling casinos in downtown Detroit have not filled the city’s coffers with “economically game-changing” tax revenue and, as far as I can tell, the bailed out, and reemerging American automobile industry is not making a significant reinvestment in either the city or the people of Detroit. Sure, I get that it all got out of whack. The unions over-stepped their mandate to insure a safe workplace, a fair wage and benefits including an expectation of a dignified retirement. But, to blame the woes of the industry and consequently the downturn of the city that spawned it, to an untenable, over-compensated workforce, is simply preposterous. The Big 3, refusing to lead the industry in the development and manufacture of safer, more fuel efficient cars and trucks, ceded their leadership to Asia and Europe, and responded to the resultant loss of market share by downsizing the legions of domestic automotive workers. When even this ‘reorganization’ was not enough to avoid imminent collapse, their controversial rescue from the brink was linked to the reimagining of a more socially conscious future. The resultant magical, (aka bullshit), transformation and the constant reminder of just how deep Chevy runs is worn like a ‘Volt’ driven cloak of ecological awareness while the luxurious and sporty Cadillac and it’s low mileage Escalade along with a battalion of high powered, no-mileage Dodge Ram trucks has preserved the multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses of executives without restoring even a fraction of the millions of lost, pre-collapse assembly, supply, clerical and ancillary positions.
The answer, therefore…probably not.
