So, Eric Cantor is the new poster boy for Not Nutty Enough. The Republican Party, (once ‘the other white meat’), has not proposed a single positive idea in so long that its new leadership is emerging from anyone who can say, “NO!”, louder and with more piously, ultra-conservative conviction.
I get why everyone’s pissed off. I’m pissed off. Government, in a free, democratic society, is, by definition, a body elected to oversee and promote the will of its people; so much for definitions. Ours has, since its inception, been about the creation of fiefdoms and favoritism for financial gain, philandering and, when accomplished with well-toned flare, public, (and non-alliterative), adoration. The very few who have taken the calling to public service to heart have faced vigorous opposition and seldom out-maneuvered the established, more powerful windmills. That’s just awful, right? What could possibly be more abhorrent than a government run amok, populated by manipulators and grifters? How about a government of complete and utter morons? We may never recover from our eight years of the not-smarter-than-a-sixth-grader commander-in-chief, but the military disaster and the financial disaster and the credibility disaster that were honed to a fine edge by that dumber-than-dumb disaster is only the tip of a rapidly melting iceberg compared to the Tea Party, ultra, ultra, ultra conservative shit storm that’s sweeping across the plains and hollers of America. The reported demise of the Tea Party that liberal pundits have been giggling about for the past couple of years, couldn’t be more untrue. At least 50% of the country, probably more, are bible thumping, mildly educated, gun-toting, government-hating, constitution-misquoting, idea-less folks whose fundamentalist leanings are every bit as whacked and scary as any masked and bearded Islamic radical, (aka: terrorist). The fact that billionaires are backing this call to anarchy, (I can’t think of any logical reason why), is even more confusing. For all of its faults, our government is still a button push from global annihilation, and the thought that that button could be placed under the thumb of someone who can’t spell “annihilation” just made me soil myself, (might just be creeping incontinence, probably a combination…can’t be certain).
The mid-term elections do matter. For those of us playing the “we give a shit game”, we have to first give the balance of power back to a Congress that will work positively with the President. Then we have to hold their feet to the fire to reform voting rights and taxes and education and immigration and conservation and ecological responsibility, because scientifically, after the polar ice caps melt, Hell could freeze over and due to unregulated, genetically engineered pork, pigs could…well, anything’s possible.
