Passion

That mysterious compulsion to pursue something with minimal or no regard for cost or resistance or personal safety, can be lauded or blamed for the best and worst behaviors of animal kind.  Whether the inbred impulse of the migratory bird, the unrelenting determination of Antarctic penguin procreation or the unwavering zealotry of…well, zealots, beauty and art and heroism and scientific wonderment, kindness and abject cruelty are all fueled by the invisible fires of burning passion.  We rely on its unbridled nature to pursue the urgings of our kinder and heartless angels in equal measure.  Its alignment with the tools, circumstance, support and surmountable path, however rocky, has spawned our every creative advancement and perpetrated the most inhumanly heinous behavior imaginable.  In the unfulfilled potential of its absence, the drabness of color, the dullness of sound and the incomplete weave of any intellectual tapestry are palpable.  I wonder, are both the Yin and the Yang necessary to one another’s existence?  Must passion fly free toward the light or the dark for either flight plan to succeed?  Is there any other impulse of which we would be better with both a lot more and a lot less?
