I’ve been a political junkie for as long as I can remember, (I’ll add the ‘wow…since last Tuesday?’ part so that I can save some of you the sarcasm). I listened to party conventions on the radio and later sat mesmerized by the pomp, circumstance and balloon barrages, first in black and white and later in color. As a kid, I felt a part of something important and adult as the grown-ups discussed and blustered, sometimes to temple-throbbing extremes about what they saw and heard. It taught me to be responsible for knowing the issues and the candidates so that I could join in the conversation and use my vote wisely. I lived, marched and protested through Civil Rights and Viet Nam and I’ve watched, heartbroken, since the campaign of Bush II, as honest and heartfelt differences, openly and passionately debated, have turned to baseless sloganeering and incendiary rhetoric devoid of truth or purpose other than to win an election. But, nothing in my very fertile imagination could have ever concocted the shit show that ended Thursday night with the acceptance rant of Donald J. Trump, (the evil Mr. T as opposed to the benevolent one that pitied any fool like the Don), and the feigned exuberance of his U-S-A-chanting minions. It was purely and simply lousy community theater, horribly written, (except for the plagiarized parts), and amateurishly performed. There were neither pros nor cons to inspire debate, no sense of decency to instill hope and compassion, only a barely literate, chest-thumping narcissist whose soul message is, “Only I know how to fix this…trust me!” He doesn’t…and we shouldn’t!
I will do my best to never speak of him again.
