I checked, and this is neither the title of a film nor a graphic novel. So, where could he possibly be getting this? It could be a weird interpretation of an Old Testament passage, a misrepresentation of “Fire and Brimstone” or perhaps two simple and seemingly scary “F’ words. Whatever the literal origin, as Donald Trump pulled this phrase out of his ass on Wednesday, the world became drastically dangerous, (that being my purposeful alliterative phrase, whilst his is merely illiterate bullshit). It would take too long to scan the dialogue of White House Down or all of the seasons of 24 to see if this was plagiarism. I thought, maybe a clever play on Shakespeare, substituting the namby-pamby ‘sound’ for ‘fire’, but that would require a literary frame of reference. I’m not 100% sure about this, but a Korean friend tells me that phonetically, ‘fire’ is very close to the word for ‘penis’ and ‘fury’ could easily be heard as ‘wart’; not as threatening as the English, but certainly, unpleasant, especially when you add the “like the world has never seen” part.
Trump blustered about nuclear strikes as an appropriate show of American might long before he considered running for President. As an uninformed citizen, his inane proclamations had little import. As POTUS, his stupidity could accidentally destroy…well, everything. His eight months of systematic bumbling has irrevocably diminished every aspect of American life, thrown the global community into uncertain chaos and made the US a potentially lethal laughing stock to the rest of the world. He truly seems dumb enough to think that he can bully Kim Jung-un into submission.
And yet, 38% of voters, (who are these people?), approve of his performance, even though he has not delivered on one of his preposterous, signature campaign promises…building the Wall, repealing and replacing, “the greatest infrastructure improvements, ever”, tax reform and “really, really great deals…I make the best deals”. What he has done is created an atmosphere of dishonesty, suspicion and controversy. He has given the finger to the scientific community’s warnings of the “imminent danger” of climate change and signed Executive Orders to undo hundreds of long fought for environmental protections. His narcissistic, baseless, stream-of-unconsciousness style of management has disrupted the flow and balance of government and not in the bragged about, “Trump’s gonna fix it!” kind of way his supporters were counting on. Now, his crackpot rhetoric has emboldened the most heinous assemblage of hateful humanity to rally in Charlottesville in all their skin-headed, toothless, hooded variations of white supremacy. What could possibly go wrong?
Seriously Mitch, McCain, Rubio…haven’t had enough yet? Are there no patriotic generals who’ve watched The Caine Mutiny? Where is the outrage? Let’s see some fire and fury…but let’s aim it at the dangerous moron who’s out to get us all.
