There they go again…those crazy, Earth-hugging Democrats proposing whack-a-doodle environmental legislation, forcing us into using only renewable energy, stopping the pollution of the water we drink and the air we breathe and embracing the scientific data on climate change by drastically reducing our contributions to it. What are they thinking? Don’t they care about all of the jobs that may be lost by employees of companies who are the worst polluters? Haven’t they seen the snow storms or felt the record cold temperatures? Science, schmience!
That was, more or less, the right-leaning response to a Congressional, Democraticly-led, bi-partisan draft outlining environmental legislation to simply do the right thing for the future of our planet and the flora and fauna that are nurtured by it. The Republican Party, and its master-of-sloganeering, parade-leader President, quickly lined up in front of any available news camera or twitter feed to snicker at such radical thinking. Mitch McConnell, however, drooling giddily on the place where his chin should be, announced that he couldn’t wait to bring the proposal up for a vote, certain that such bizarre, lefty behavior would be the central issue to undo Democratic hopes for 2020. Sadly, Mitch, who otherwise hasn’t shown much interest in the Senate voting on anything, may be right. Somehow, of all of the smarty pants, (you know, educated people who’ve read books and shit), liberals, there seems to be a consistent lack of a calm, cool congenial presenter of ideas that should invoke strong, popular support. Obama, of course, didn’t count because he was, well, black. Corey Booker? Ooops. Of the other loud voices trying to get into the heads of the confused masses, the Dems keep rolling out angry, whiny, snarky, apologetic, holier-than-thou pedants whose every sentence is a headline for a right-wing attack ad. Is only evil spin effective? Can’t the right-thinking, (see where I went there), brainiacs craft a message meant for anyone who cares about survival that can stand up to the false rhetoric that survival means sacrifice? A green future by a global-leading America, coupled with a desperate need to revamp every part of our infrastructure, if approached with the vigor of a moon landing, would trigger the most inclusive, enriching socio-economic boom the world has ever seen. Please, somebody likeable, say that!
