Justice, in its purest form, is the concept of equal and fair treatment or the person tasked to dispense such treatment and the United States of America is the first country founded on the basic principle of “…freedom and justice for all”. That was a lofty declaration by our founders and one that nearly 250 years of history has proven elusive, at best. I would posit that the “all” certainly discounted slaves and most certainly undervalued women. We have chipped away at those inequities through both benign and violent protest and one Civil War and now find ourselves backsliding. We have elected representatives who promote bigotry and misogyny as if they were the Constitutional intent…perhaps they’re not incorrect. But this is not the America of the last century, the shining beacon of democracy and opportunity that gave us the pride and the will to do better and be better. The checks and balances of America and our keen sense and observation of justice would never allow a heinous, philandering grifter to take hold of the most intolerant, hate-filled elements of our society…would they? Well, apparently, yes, they would, and now a twice impeached, twice indicted crime boss is gaining in power and popularity and being held accountable for his unquestionable criminality is by no means guaranteed. In other third-world countries, not unlike what we have become, justice demands that self-confessed, caught-red-handed traitors be given a cigarette and a blindfold or be bent over a chopping block. I’ll wait here.
