I struggle with the complexities of human behavior. There are nearly 8 billion of us milling around our planet…800,000,000 in extreme poverty, (less than $2.15/day), another 800,000,000 in abject poverty, (around $5/day), 100 million refugees displaced by war and famine and ethnic cruelty and an anthropological guesstimate that 4 billion of us, half of all the human population, harbor deep feelings of hopelessness for a brighter, more inclusive and peaceful future. More than 80% of us profess religious-based morality rooted in kindness and love for our fellow man, yet we have systematically drawn and quartered the globe into a tribalized mélange of intolerant fiefdoms of greed and power in the name of Jesus or Allah or Moses, (take your pick), so untrusting of one another, that the lofty idea of world peace would be laughable if it were not so tragically devastating.
I literally can’t breathe when I allow these statistics to wash over me. How can we have sunk so far? How can any decent human being watch a madman like Putin or Assad kill or displace millions of innocent people? How can it be a thing that the Supreme Court gets to turn back the clock on human rights? Why isn’t Donald Trump already in prison? Why do we allow a dumbfuck, racist asshole like Tommy Tuberville to speak into a live microphone? When did we become some overwhelmingly unkind?
