Hail to the Chief

I really wasn’t prepared for Monday’s Inauguration ceremony to be a goose-bumpy moment; certainly not like last time.  But then, the guy I actually voted for showed up to take the oath, (even if he couldn’t get out the word “states”), and gave the unexpected speech that I’d been waiting to hear from him for four years.  Many Republicans, (although the ones on the platform attempted to smile apolitically), took it as a shot across their conservative bow and, after waiting the appropriate amount of time mandated by right wing protocol, (I believe it’s in the seven minute range), they began to attack every item, line by line.  Let’s take a look at some of them, shall we?

• Take serious action against the threat of climate change

• Honor our founding principle that all men, (and women), are created equal to eliminate any bias with regard to gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity

• Embrace our heritage as a nation of immigrants

• Accelerate our drive toward clean energy independence

John Boehner’s response:

“Given what we heard yesterday about the president’s vision for his second term, it’s pretty clear to me — should be clear to all of you — that he knows he can’t do any of that as long as the House is controlled by Republicans,”.

You may need to read the list over a few times to see if you can determine what is so objectionable to the “House controlled Republicans”.  As far as I can tell, many of them actually reside on Planet Earth; among their rank and file are men, women, (gay and straight), and at least a couple of assorted non-white members; hardly any native Americans, so they’re all second or third generation immigrants; maybe it’s the energy thing…lovin’ that clean coal.

If these policies are “sticking it to somebody” or “drawing a liberal line in the sand”, I can only hope that President Obama has the resolve to keep on sticking and drawing.
