Gay marriage, gun control, global warming, research funding for, well, for just about anything…the tipping point between any of these issues transitioning from unholy, socially unacceptable, liberal propaganda or Chicken Little scare tactic to the righteous and responsible column, is the proximity of enough opponents to a loved one personally effected by any or all of the above. The realities haven’t changed, but I guess we have evolved, (oh no…not that!), at least to the point where most of us can embrace sanity over disowning a homosexual child or sibling, or the lust for murderous weaponry after losing a loved one, or denying our detrimental effect on a planet that responds by wiping out our home town, or turning away from epidemic diseases until they ravage our friends and family.
On the one hand, I am sickened by the blatantly self-serving epiphanies that have spread like an oozing wave of enlightenment from soapbox to soapbox of one outspoken adversary to another. On the other, if, for whatever insincere reasons, the result inches us closer to a world that is more like one that smart people might have designed, I’ll take that.
And…for those diehards, who would still ignore science, threaten to kill anyone who asks for the simple security of making it less likely that they would do so, or disavow the existence of their children whose gender is but a chromosonal mishmash of their own genetic material, please report to Michele Bachmann, (Marcus is G-A-Y, you nincompoop!), for further details.
