Back in the 50’s, on Northlawn Ave., when Detroit was way more than just a cool place to call your hometown, we spent many a Spring, Summer and Fall afternoon and evening playing extended rounds of Kick the Can as well as its more exciting, and exponentially more dangerous hybrid, Duck on a Rock. Back then, kicking the can down the road evoked screams of delight and would never have been thought of as a tactic to postpone anything. In fact, it insured our prolonged enjoyment of the game at hand. How dare whomever is responsible, (the media, pollsters, pathetic politicians?), for usurping KTC as a negative metaphor for shirking one’s responsibilities! Come on! There are certainly many well-worn and appropriate expressions that could be substituted without maligning such a fond childhood memory. How about:
Malinger
Dilly dally
Fritter away
Spit, (or piss), in the wind
Head in the sand or up your ass
Or, may I suggest some more contemporary alternatives connoting a complete waste of time:
Go for a Cruz
Pull a Boehner
Have a tea party
Ponder political strategy
Michelle Bachmann (as either an adjective or a noun)
Just leave my can alone!
