This should not be confused with the unsuccessful Senate legislation attempted, by Republicans, during W’s administration. That, very clearly, was the Nucular Option…very different.
Stupid name aside, the change to make a simple majority of fifty-one votes replace the dumb super majority of sixty votes necessary to confirm most presidential appointees, is just the way it should be. Whiny senators of both parties have bemoaned this change as the end of democracy and the downfall of the American way of life. Those in the minority profess that without the power of the filibuster to stall or kill legislation or confirmation from coming to a vote, the balance of power is too skewed toward the majority party. Well…yes…as a reflection of we the people who voted for those senators.
The real nuclear option should be, that elected legislators must get down to the business of fixing so much of our broken country, HEALTH CARE, TAXES, EDUCATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, IMMIGRATION, or we have the option to nuke them.
And…this PS to Dear Barry, (3)
I think you went way overboard with the, “If you like the policy you have…”, crap. You should have addressed the worthless junk policies that millions of people thought perfectly functional and affordable, (although those would be people who never had to utilize them for serious care), that would have to be replaced to meet the standards of the Affordable Care Act. Your phony-baloney fix was stupid, insincere and unenforceable. That said, if you push through this deal to keep troops in Afghanistan, virtually indefinitely, after promising and promising and promising to bring them home next year, you will have squandered the last bit of respect I have for you. You are breaking my heart.
