Did you see the announcement? Climate change has officially come to the US. Never fear, we won’t be taking this lying down. Not unlike our response to international terrorism encroaching our turf, I expect there to be an all-out military response aimed, (with laser-sighted accuracy), at kicking CC’s insidious ass. Sadly, this will probably not result in a particularly positive outcome, (see, “terrorism”, ½ inch above), but there will be well-orchestrated parades, apologetic collateral damage and endless CNN and Fox News updates using the same data to come to polar opposite opinions. Oh, and a clock or colorful calculator to show the running cost of the trillions, (or whatever the four thing is that comes next), wasted on the battle. Going cold turkey on the known contributing behaviors that are irreparably damaging our ecosphere, (an alternate strategy that would cost a tiny fraction of the above tetra-whatever), will not be seriously considered by anyone not already hugging a tree, especially since those squeezes are becoming, more and more, defeatist, goodbye hugs. Those opposed to actions that could save our collective butts, like calling a halt to the wholesale destruction of our rainforests, or ending the belching of millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every day, or building even one more carbon-combustibly-engined vehicle, should be visited by a Dickensian ghost of the future, (the very, very near future), who will take them on a journey to where humankind is all but extinct and cockroaches have once again ascended to their rightful place as the dominant species. I just can’t believe that there isn’t something short of alien intervention that would light an urgently metaphorical fire before it’s, (and it may already be), too late. Maybe this…if the most direly predictive science is accurate, it’s possible that we won’t have enough time left to bring Game of Thrones or Mad Men to their unsatisfying conclusions…and who can live with that?
