Je Suis Charlie!

I’m not much of a cartoonist.  I have one go-to, life-long obsessive Chilly Willy-skating-on-an-ice-floe-doodle that has been unconsciously drawing itself whenever I have found myself with paper, (napkins qualifying more often than not), pen or pencil and an odd moment or two at hand.  I have not thought it political or otherwise controversial, but, as I have never shied from blubbering on, PC or not, about any topic rattling around in my head, I would certainly, without reservation, entertain the use of the cuddly penguin to drive home my point.  Not that cartoons stand alone as the trigger mechanism stirring whackos toward violent retribution, but having to tread cautiously on the thematic subject matter of Dilbert or Broom Hilda seems an unnecessary, paranoid burden on the author/artist.  The bravery and resolve of Charlie Hebdo to stand up to the threats and ultimate, violent attack by those they chose to satirize cannot possibly be reconciled in the price they paid.  Radical insanity, the proliferation of lethal resources and the anonymity of randomness put any of us with a contrary opinion at risk.  This is not, as we are being told, an unfortunate yet minor problem.  We are highly imperfect beings, much more in tune with our differences than our need to embrace our commonality.  We have an instinctive nature to overemphasize the things that make us different; skin color, stature, nationality, sexuality, the gods we’ve invented to pray to.  We have created and continue to create newer avenues for intolerance and the increasing hopelessness exacerbated by misguided policies of austerity that keep widening the economic gap is providing a recruitment pool of unimaginable numbers, one impassioned YouTube call-to-action video away from a million more horrific Charlie Hebdo-like events.
