On April 20, 2010 British Petroleum’s Deep Water Horizon began spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico.  It continued, unchecked, for eighty-seven days.  The devastation to the water, beaches, wildlife and the lifestyle and livelihood of millions of people in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida cannot be quantified by simple dollar valuation.  The irresponsible actions of BP’s drilling techniques, their disregard for the safe operation of the rig, the fact that they had absolutely no contingency plan to address such a disaster and, despite the millions spent on TV ads to spin just how much they truly, truly care, the company continues to drill, thrive, collect huge government subsidies and has proven, by their actions, that they really, really don’t.  After more than five years, while many of those affected lost everything while waiting for restitution, an army of corporate attorneys have crafted a settlement providing a fraction of what it would take to restitute any thing or anybody.
