Odds are, Kellyanne Conway will remain an integral part of the Trump administration, (even typing those last two words sends shivers up my spine). There’s no question that she deserves most of the credit, (blame), for crafting his message and recognizing how to spoon feed it to the erratic, uninformed electorate. The horror that awaits us is that none of it relied on truth or substance or factual research, a grasp of foreign or domestic policy, Constitutional accuracy, compassion or common sense…apparently, just what America was looking for. Unspun, the combined agendas of the sideshow freaks that are likely to make up the “inner circle”, (Giuliani, Bannon, Gingrich and Sessions…can Christie survive?), after dismantling ObamaCare, denying climate change and appointing as many lunatics as they can find seats for on the Supreme Court, are as empty as…well, whatever is the best metaphor for the emptiest thing. Although Kellyanne’s job will be to continue her non-stop talky thing to keep 48.9% of America Stepford-chanting meaningless, rallying slogans, at some point, the gravitas of governing will kick in. We were privy to a tiny glimpse of this in DJT’s visit with Obama, wherein bluster and bravado appeared to be replaced by a genuine, humble respect for the office. Donald’s calm yet deer-in-the-headlights demeanor seemed, to me, to be his oh-my-fucking-god-what-have-I-gotten-myself-into moment. He’s always been a pretender. Now, he has to pretend to be President…like Ronald Reagan.
I get the abject despair and unbridled rage of everyone who feels disenfranchised by the result of the distasteful process that has led us to this moment in history. We are a sadly broken and tragically imperfect society, divisive in ways that poke at wounds that should have been long healed. Yet, it is not in our best interest to shout down those who disagree with us, (I’ll try to reel that in), but to speak our truths in louder and louder voices. If Trump, in any significant way, chooses to be the Hitler-esque demagogue he portrayed during the campaign, then we must rise up to insure, by any means, that such a monster does not remain in power…not here…not ever. If, however, this reality show is but a sequel to the Whacky World of Politics, we shouldn’t resort to pitch forks and muskets, it’s about community organizing and really taking part in the hard, hapless work of self-governance. We are where we are because we have all been too pampered by our assurance that the power will come on when we flip the switch and the roads will be fixed, (eventually), and the fires will be put out and the water will be drinkable and somebody will teach our kids and the bad guys will be held accountable. It’s time to unspin those expectations, most of which teeter on the very edge of collapse, and demand real change for the issues we all share in common. If not with this administration, then the next or the next or…
