At 14, even though I wasn’t much of a car kid, I remember watching Tod and Buz, (really, one ‘d’, one ‘z’), motor down Route 66 in their vintage, (I guess it wasn’t so vintage then), Vette, living a carefree life of hedonistic adventure and thinking…that’s definitely something I want to do some day. Well, having just turned 66 without fulfilling that particular dream and having lost the desire to drive to the grocery store no less from Chicago through Saint Looey, Joplin, Missouri and Oklahoma City, (even if it’s mighty pretty), even to see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona, lest I forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino on my way to LA, I instead have taken the occasion of my 66th to reflect on the road I have traveled. Other than being musical at almost every turn, there is little on the path that would have been foretold in my early journals…if I had kept early journals. Contrary to my perceived curmudgeonly nature, (Mr. Grumpy? Really, BR?), the trip has been mostly giddy, certainly with my share of painful reality, but in the rearview, (I’m done with the bullshit road trip metaphors), the places I’ve been, the things I’ve seen, the music I touched and touched me back and mostly the people, my family and friends have provided…and continue to provide me with a full measure of joy and adventure. Thanks.
