Dear Joe Manchin

I hope you’re enjoying your name-on-the-tip-of-everybody’s-tongue status.  While trying to make sense of the political state of our currently fragile union, your elevated importance would seem, to me, anyway, in need of some arm’s-length clarity.  I’m delighted to assist in that endeavor.

You know that your behavior has dire consequences, right?  I don’t have superpowers that allow me to look into your heart, but I do possess a rather well-honed bullshit radar, especially for politicians who crave the constant spotlight of the Twitter and the talk shows, (spoiler Alert – most of those blips would read, scumbag-lying-asshole on my equipment), and I find you to skew, mostly sincere.  So, what the fuck, Joe?  Even though I can’t imagine the full impact of what it must feel like to suddenly have such legislative power, I would like to think that if it were me in your shoes, I would want the legacy and the history of my actions to be among the pantheon of the most selfless and most caring.  Stop posturing about your responsibility to your West Virginia constituents.  They don’t give a fuck about the filibuster, or bipartisanship or the number of Supreme Court justices.  They don’t want you to play nice with Mitch McConnell or Lindsey Graham and the only reason most of them voted for Trump was that they got bamboozled into believing that he had their backs.  If you really have their backs, then use your spotlight to clearly explain to them that everything the Democrats are proposing will make their lives better and everything the Republicans are opposing will only pile more truckloads of closed-forever-coal mine shit on their heads.  Then, get your own shit together and fully and loudly endorse infrastructure, climate science, voting rights, racial equality, gun safety, education, education, education, and then find a great photographer, (call if you need a suggestion), to capture the image that will join those of Gandhi and MLK and Mandella on a future forever stamp of the really, really good guys.  Rarely, is anyone handed an opportunity to so clearly choose how they will be remembered…pick wisely and quickly!
