Boo

I never found anything scary about Halloween when I was a kid.  Even the accompanying “horror films” made me chuckle.  Of course, there was the fear of getting caught for participating in some Hell Night prank, but that was more about subsequent punishment than mortal danger.  And…there was candy.

Not so this year.  With less than 48 hours before election day, I’m scared shitless…and, ironically, this election, superimposed over any other time in history, would be hardly consequential.  Democracy, at least American democracy appears to be irreparably damaged.  Our ridiculous notion of a Republic, giving idiotic legislative power to often miniscule municipalities called states, has brought us to the brink of collapse.  The national will of the people is having dirt kicked in its face by a minority of wrong-minded, ill-intentioned bullies stirred to action for little more motivation other than chaos.  The majority of our states, (37), represent only 26% of Americans and yet they have or are currently enacting laws that diminish equality, outlaw history and turn a blind eye to environmental responsibility.  They have gerrymandered the electorate to ensure their hold on power and they are bolstered by a devious, decades-long packing of courts from traffic to Supreme.  There is no cavalry coming, certainly not from the rag-tag Democrats.  We are truly fucked and that is scary.

On a more positive note…there’s still candy.
