There’s a point in time, I guess, where history becomes educated conjecture rather than chronicled reportage. But, even far past that demarcation, the reliability of studied archaeological and anthropological artifacts is deemed to be scholarly, accepted gospel. Advances in carbon dating and the visual forensics of enhanced photogrammetry have allowed scientists to peek into the nooks and crannies of our past as never before. Certainly, the last five hundred years, or so, have credibly documented eye-witness accounts of both the critical and mundane activities of planet Earth. Sure, we dutifully tweak accepted history when pertinent data arise, but the broad strokes are quite widely established. It’s important, history is. It’s the baseline for change and the looming, collective conscience of what we have done, both right and wrong. What it is not, is a manipulative tool for reimagining truth to condone abhorrent behavior. Religion does that. Despots do that. And now, because the world has truly gone mad, school boards in Florida and Alabama and Texas are doing that. These crackpots have decided to mandate a false historic curriculum in an attempt to keep all of that truthy wokeness away from their destined-to-be dumbfuck offspring. Luckily, most bookstores are closing or they would all have to create a new Non-nonfiction section. Glass half full, people!
